Record-low water levels on the Danube River, with the Rhine also nearing historic lows, are raising concerns among travelers booked on upcoming Viking River Cruises. Heather Viking, Director of the Viking Division at Club Cruise, urges passengers to stay informed and flexible rather than making hasty decisions based on news reports.

"The biggest Viking mistake right now would be canceling a cruise before knowing what Viking plans to do with your specific departure," Heather said. River conditions can vary dramatically by location and change quickly, she noted, advising travelers to seek information about their ship, sailing date, and itinerary rather than relying on reports from other areas.

The Associated Press reported on July 30 that extended drought and extreme heat had pushed portions of the Danube to record-low levels. The Rhine was also nearing record lows in Germany, though navigation continued with restrictions in some areas.

For travelers departing within the next several weeks, Heather recommends several steps. First, do not cancel based solely on the news, as voluntary cancellations may incur penalties. Instead, wait for Viking's operating plan for the specific sailing. Second, monitor the reservation through email, voicemail, and My Viking Journey, paying attention to notices about embarkation or disembarkation locations, revised meeting points, and ship substitutions. Third, contact the travel advisor who holds the booking. Travelers booked directly should contact Viking directly, ask specific questions, and retain copies of all communications. Fourth, keep essentials like passports, medication, and valuables in a carry-on, as luggage may be moved separately during ship swaps. Finally, review independent travel arrangements for cancellation and change terms, as a changed embarkation point can have a ripple effect.

Operational changes when a Viking ship cannot pass may include revised docking locations, modified itineraries, excursions operated by motorcoach, temporary land transfers, ship swaps, or in rare cases, shortened or canceled sailings. "The operational response can involve ships, captains, ports, buses, hotels, luggage teams, guides, meals and hundreds of guests—all moving at once," Heather said. She emphasized that experience, scale, and logistics matter during such disruptions.

Regarding the Rhine, Heather noted that similar challenges exist but urged travelers to focus on their exact route. "This is not only a Danube issue, but it is also not affecting every river, every ship or every itinerary equally," she said.

Heather also addressed the unpredictability of river conditions, pointing to advice from Viking's Senior Vice President of Sales, Michele Saegesser, that sudden summer rainfall can change river levels within a short period. "Today's measurement is important, but it is not a guaranteed forecast for a sailing two or three weeks away," Heather said.

For travelers considering July and August departures, Heather noted that while these months offer long daylight hours and attractive promotions, they also carry increased risk of low-water disruption. "There is no perfect month that guarantees a perfect river," she said, advising travelers to choose a season that fits their priorities and prepare accordingly.

Heather highlighted Viking's scale as an advantage during disruptions, citing its fleet of 89 river vessels, including 59 Longships, and its proven ship-swap experience. During the 2022 low-water conditions, 14 percent of Rhine sailings involved ship swaps, with guest-quality ratings comparable to unaffected sailings. "That is one reason I recommend Viking," Heather said. "Its scale, similar ships and operational experience give it alternatives that may not be available to a company with only one or two vessels operating on a route."

Travelers are advised to review notices for their exact sailing, keep contact information updated, and document all communications. They should not panic-cancel based on headlines or depend on unofficial social media reports. "When Club Cruise is the advisor of record, our client has someone who can interpret the communication, document what occurred, contact the appropriate department and advocate for a reasonable resolution," Heather said.
