#45 is the best thing to happen to diversity and inclusion. It’s started a conversation.

Nearly 50 exhibitors showcased their diversity & inclusion products at #SHRMDiv
Diversity is not about counting heads. It is about making all heads count.
Diversity does not work without inclusion.
If there is no need, there is no benefit. You can’t measure ROI if the needs haven’t been assessed.
These are just some of the sound bites from the 2017 SHRM Diversity & Inclusion Conference in San Francisco, attended by nearly 1,000 individuals.
I met so many wonderful and intelligent people committed to bringing more diversity and inclusion to their workplaces — not just because it is the right thing to do but also because they know that diversity and inclusion makes their companies and products better.
There were too many great speakers and solution providers to list but I really enjoyed the general session by Dr. Tony Byers, particularly his interactive Elephants In Denmark exercise — if 90% of your team answers “gray elephant in Denmark” then how can you possibly innovate? And if you don’t innovate, how can you survive in today’s marketplace? It was an eye-opening exercise and made the point of how important D&I is for a business to be competitive. It started a conversation.
Starting a conversation. I felt that was the major theme of this D&I conference. Without a meaningful and constructive conversation, change cannot happen. But starting conversations can be difficult. One creative way to start a conversation is through the use of games. Gamification is an effective tool for diversity and inclusion trainers looking for fun and interactive ways to get people talking about difficult subjects.

Point Made Films was one of many organizations using gamification to educate people and start D&I conversations.
I left the conference upbeat, optimistic and excited about where the D&I conversation is going. Nice work SHRM. Here’s my Twitter recap of #SHRMDiv.
