Ancient Assyrian Recipes Revived in New Cookbook

The Oldest Kitchen in the World: 4,000 Years of Middle Eastern Cooking Passed Down Through Generations is set to debut in English markets on September 24, 2024. This cookbook, a fusion of historical exploration and culinary tradition, brings to light ancient Assyrian recipes compiled by Matay de Mayee based on the culinary expertise of his mother, Smuni Turan.

Matay de Mayee, writing on behalf of his mother who grew up in an era when girls were not taught to read or write, states, "She is essentially the author of this cookbook." The book delves into the history, traditions, celebrations, language, and customs of the Suryoye, also known as Assyrians or Arameans. Despite their global diaspora, the Suryoye continue to honor their heritage through dialects of Aramaic and traditional recipes.

Featuring dishes in their original Aramaic names, the cookbook includes some of the oldest recipes ever recorded, such as labiniyeh, alongside beloved classics like baklava. De Mayee and his mother share time-honored cooking secrets, versatile uses for often-overlooked ingredients, and traditions that have seemingly been forgotten over time.

Renowned food writer Nigel Slater has praised the book as "a rare and fascinating insight into an ancient and delicious cuisine...with time-honored recipes from the heart of a home." This endorsement highlights the significance of the cookbook as a valuable addition to any collection, appealing to both history buffs and culinary enthusiasts.

Published by Tra Publishing and distributed globally through Simon & Schuster, The Oldest Kitchen in the World will be accessible at major bookstores, online retailers, and via Tra Publishing's official website.
