CAHEC has announced the recipients of its 2024 CAHEC Awards, celebrating significant contributions to affordable housing and community development. The awards were presented during the Partners Conference in downtown Raleigh, with the Awards Luncheon held on June 4th.
Charleston Square Apartments in Troy, Alabama, was awarded Development of the Year. The property underwent a comprehensive rehabilitation, including upgrades to the community building, a new computer center, an indoor fitness center, a gazebo, and a covered picnic pavilion. Additionally, the playground and pavements were renovated, new bicycle racks were installed, and crucial accessibility upgrades were made to meet modern standards. Impressively, post-rehab rent increases were capped at $5 per month across all unit types, ensuring affordability for residents. The property also includes three units dedicated to households with persons with disabilities or homeless individuals.
The CAHEC Values Award was given to Shannon Pow, President and Owner of Remnant Management, Inc. Shannon, who founded the company with her children in 2020, is recognized for her extensive experience in affordable housing and her dedication to her residents. Her leadership and commitment to CAHEC's core values of Integrity, Excellence, Innovation, and Fun make her an exemplary awardee. In addition to her role at Remnant Management, Shannon serves as the Chief Financial and Operations Officer for United Management II and holds both a North Carolina broker-in-charge license and a general contractor license.
The Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness (ICAW) received the Outstanding Community Impact award. The center, established by Senior Services, aims to foster intergenerational interactions and improve access to essential social services. The facility supports elder care, healthcare, early childhood education, and arts programs. It also houses an expanded Head Start program, a culinary job training café, and a geriatric clinic and research center. ICAW's innovative approach is made possible through collaboration with twenty-one community partners.
The Resident Spotlight award was presented to Tina Rice, a resident of Northpoint Commons II in Asheville, NC. Tina is a full-time instructional assistant at Buncombe County Schools and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in social work at Mars Hill University. Despite being diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder, she remains committed to community service, volunteering at local food banks, organizing clothing drives, and fundraising for charitable causes. Her dedication to breaking the cycle of trauma and supporting her community exemplifies the spirit of the Resident Spotlight award.
