CAHEC New Markets has invested in a groundbreaking project to address situational homelessness through the Raleigh Rescue Mission's new campus, The Garden, located in Knightdale, North Carolina. The facility represents a significant expansion of support services for vulnerable families, with the capacity to accommodate up to 300-350 women and children annually.
The new campus will dramatically increase the organization's ability to provide comprehensive support, featuring 101 rooms divided between family and individual housing. Unlike traditional shelters, The Garden focuses on holistic recovery through its New Life Plan, which includes job training, mental and physical health services, and financial literacy classes.
Current limitations of the existing shelter, which can only support 60 women and 40 men nightly, will be overcome by this new development. The facility will include a Children's Learning Center with capacity for 150 children and the ability to serve 182,500 meals annually.
Brian Oxford, Director of Community Capital at CAHEC, emphasized the project's transformative potential, describing it as more than just a shelter but a community designed to empower women and children seeking a fresh start. The development aligns with the New Markets Tax Credit program's goal of stimulating economic and community development in low-income areas.
Future phases of the project include plans for transitional housing apartments and a gymnasium, alongside adjacent market-rate single-family homes and a planned commercial hub. This comprehensive approach aims to create an integrated, mixed-income neighborhood that promotes inclusion and opportunity.
