Cherished Mom, a national nonprofit organization focused on maternal mental health, will host its 5th Annual Pregnancy & Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) Awareness Day on May 2, 2025. The event highlights a critical yet often overlooked maternal health challenge that affects 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 deliveries.
Postpartum psychosis is a severe perinatal mood and anxiety disorder characterized by sudden onset of symptoms including hallucinations, delusions, confusion, and rapid mood swings. The condition carries significant risks, with an estimated 5% suicide rate and 4% infanticide rate, underscoring the urgent need for public awareness and medical intervention.
Founder Kristina Dulaney emphasizes the human impact behind these statistics, stressing that increased awareness, education, and advocacy can prevent unnecessary tragedies and support affected mothers. The organization seeks to break the stigma surrounding maternal mental health and provide pathways to healing for families nationwide.
Healthcare providers, community partners, and individuals are encouraged to participate by sharing educational resources and amplifying the organization's message. Early identification and appropriate intervention are crucial, as postpartum psychosis is considered a psychiatric emergency with potential for recovery when addressed promptly.
By highlighting this often-misunderstood condition, Cherished Mom aims to ensure that no mother suffers in silence and that comprehensive mental health support becomes a standard part of maternal care.
