CitizenPass, a Canadian citizenship test preparation platform, announced a major update to its web and mobile applications in response to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada's (IRCC) March 2026 rule changes that made the citizenship test a fully online, self-administered exam for the first time. As of March 9, 2026, permanent residents aged 18 to 54 must take the citizenship knowledge test online from home, with an expanded time limit of 45 minutes, up to three attempts, and webcam identity verification.
CitizenPass has updated every section of its platform—including practice tests, study guide, mock exams, and AI coach—to reflect the new format, ensuring immigrants practice for the actual test they will face. "Canada changed the rules, and we changed with them the same week," said the CitizenPass team. "Our mission is to make sure every immigrant walking into the citizenship process—or logging in from home—feels completely prepared and confident."
The platform is bilingual in English and French and offers 600+ official-style practice questions covering all topics from the Discover Canada guide, a 24/7 AI citizenship coach, a 12-chapter study guide, timed mock exams that replicate the online test format, gamification with streaks and badges, and spaced-repetition flashcards using the SM-2 algorithm.
Unlike older study resources still referencing the pre-pandemic in-person 30-minute written exam, CitizenPass now features practice sessions calibrated to the 45-minute online format, webcam preparation guidance, three-attempt strategy coaching, an updated question bank drawn from the 300-400 question pool IRCC uses, and an online test simulation mode replicating the exact digital interface.
The rule changes affect all permanent residents aged 18-54 currently in the citizenship application process. CitizenPass is free to download and use, with a premium subscription for unlimited access. It is accessible via any web browser at citizenpass.ca, on the Apple App Store, and on Google Play.
These changes mark a significant shift in how Canada administers its citizenship test. The online format offers convenience but requires reliable internet and webcam access.
