Colorado FIRST Mourns the Loss of Visionary Leader Tony English

The STEM education community is mourning the loss of Tony English, a board director and executive director at Colorado FIRST, who passed away on June 16, 2025. English was a pivotal figure in promoting STEM education across Colorado, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

English's journey with Colorado FIRST began in 2006 when he founded a FIRST® LEGO® League team for his children, which eventually grew into Team 4499 'The Highlanders'. This team has influenced over 150 students, many of whom have pursued STEM degrees and careers, showcasing the profound impact of English's dedication to mentorship and education.

Recognized nationally in 2015 with the Woody Flowers Finalist Award, English's leadership and passion for STEM education were unparalleled. His appointment to the Colorado FIRST Board of Directors in May 2022 was driven by his mission to expand access to FIRST programs, ensuring more students could be inspired by the possibilities within STEM fields.

In the wake of his passing, the Colorado FIRST Board has appointed Debbie English as the new Executive Director and Board Member. Debbie, who has been a long-standing program leader for Colorado FIRST, shares the late Tony English's vision for advancing STEM opportunities for youth in Colorado. The board expressed their confidence in her ability to lead the organization forward with the same dedication and heart that Tony exemplified.
