Colorado Rural Health Center Celebrates National Rural Health Day, Highlighting Importance of Rural Healthcare

The Colorado Rural Health Center (CRHC) commemorated National Rural Health Day on November 23, 2024, with a visit to Melissa Memorial Hospital (MMH) in Holyoke, Colorado. This annual celebration, held on the third Thursday of November since 2011, aims to recognize the vital contributions of rural communities and their healthcare providers.

CRHC CEO Michelle Mills emphasized the significance of the day, stating, "On National Rural Health Day, we are thankful for our rural healthcare facilities and their dedicated team members." The celebration included a catered meal, a tour of MMH facilities, and remarks from CRHC and MMH leadership. A Governor's Proclamation was also read to honor the work of rural facilities.

Michael Hassel, CEO of Melissa Memorial Hospital, highlighted the importance of the event, describing it as "not just a moment to celebrate, but a call to action to keep pushing forward." He emphasized the challenges faced by rural hospitals, which often must do more with limited resources while remaining responsive to community needs.

The celebration also recognized MMH's pivotal role in the passage of SB24-168 during the recent state legislative session. This law, signed in May, expands access to Remote Patient Monitoring services and Continuous Glucose Monitors for Medicaid members across Colorado. The hospital's advocacy efforts, including testimony and education campaigns, were crucial in securing the bill's passage.

Jayden Miracle, Clinic Manager at MMH, underscored the unique nature of rural healthcare, noting its focus on personalized, whole-patient care through innovation and personal connections. "We can improve health outcomes while developing lasting relationships with our patients," Miracle stated.

The event highlights the ongoing challenges and importance of rural healthcare in Colorado and across the nation. As rural hospitals continue to face financial pressures and workforce shortages, celebrations like National Rural Health Day serve to raise awareness of their critical role in maintaining the health and well-being of rural communities.
