Comcast Begins High-Speed Internet Expansion on Key Peninsula

In collaboration with Pierce County, Comcast has initiated the construction of high-speed internet infrastructure on the Key Peninsula, marking a significant step in expanding reliable broadband services to the area. The project aims to extend Comcast's fiber-rich Xfinity network to hundreds of homes and businesses, offering multi-gigabit speeds for residential customers and up to 100 Gbps for business clients.

Residents and businesses in some parts of the Key Peninsula will start accessing Comcast services as early as later this year. The construction, which is expected to continue until 2025, will eventually provide over 500 homes and businesses with next-generation broadband options.

To keep local residents informed, Comcast has launched an online resource detailing network construction updates, frequently asked questions, and service information, available at: https://washington.comcast.com/network-expansion/.

The construction will span the Key Peninsula from north to south between 144th St NW to Hall Rd NW, and from west to east between 188th Ave NW to Wright Bliss Rd NW. Work will take place Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents should be aware of posted signs indicating work areas, and temporary road closures or detours may be necessary. Parking restrictions in construction zones will also be in effect, although access to properties will be maintained as much as possible. Construction contractor Cannon Companies will notify residents at least 10 days in advance of any temporary restrictions or road closures.

This project is a public-private partnership between Comcast and Pierce County, with an estimated cost of $5 million. Pierce County is contributing $3.75 million of federal funding allocated through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) to support this initiative aimed at improving broadband infrastructure in underserved areas.

Jen Tetatzin, Director of Pierce County Planning and Public Works, highlighted the importance of broadband in modern infrastructure, stating, "Broadband Internet has become one of the essential infrastructures our communities rely upon. We’re proud to support the expansion of broadband to more Pierce County residents for their business, education, and entertainment needs."

Roy Novosel, Vice President of Engineering at Comcast Washington, emphasized the economic and innovative benefits of the project, noting, "Access to technology is a powerful driver of economic growth and innovation, and we look forward to connecting more Key Peninsula residents to all the opportunities broadband offers. We are expanding our network over 25 miles to connect homes and businesses to reliable and fast broadband service."
