Community Foundation of Broward Awards $900,000 in Grants for Cancer Research

The Community Foundation of Broward has announced two new grants for cancer research, totaling $900,000, to enhance access to cutting-edge treatments and support for patients in Broward County. The grants, awarded to Memorial Foundation and Nova Southeastern University (NSU), focus on lung cancer biomarkers and precision therapy, and exosome-based immunotherapies for melanoma, respectively.

Memorial Foundation's project, led by Dr. Luis E. Raez, aims to expand a biobank for lung cancer research by collecting and analyzing samples from a diverse patient pool. This initiative, in collaboration with Florida Atlantic University, seeks to discover predictive and prognostic biomarkers for tailored treatments. NSU's research, under Dr. Dmitriy Minond and Dr. Vladimir Beljanski, explores how exosomes from treated melanoma cells can enhance the immune system's ability to fight cancer, potentially leading to more effective treatments.

These grants underscore the Community Foundation's commitment to closing health equity gaps and ensuring diverse populations have access to revolutionary cancer therapies. Since 2016, the Foundation has invested over $3 million in local cancer research, significantly impacting patient care and treatment accessibility in Broward County.
