Consultant Charlie Montgomery Publishes Three-Book Series on Bookkeeper Theft Targeting Small Businesses

Business consultant and full-charge bookkeeper Charlie Montgomery has released a three-book series aimed at helping small and mid-sized business owners guard against theft by their own bookkeepers, a crime she describes as far more common than most owners realize. The series comprises 36 Ways Your Bookkeeper Steals From You, How To Hire And Manage A Bookkeeper, and Blueprint for a Successful Pickpocket Bookkeeper, all available now.

The release matters because bookkeeper theft sits at the intersection of two vulnerabilities that define small business finances: concentrated trust in a single person who controls the books, and thin cash reserves that leave little room for losses. Montgomery, who has spent 45 years consulting with small businesses, was often brought in only after a company's books had become too inaccurate or incomplete for a CPA to handle. In that work she repeatedly encountered trusted bookkeepers quietly draining cash, sometimes for years before anyone noticed.

The first book lays out the specific methods she has uncovered firsthand, from skimming cash to manipulating company financial systems, and explains why such theft so often goes undetected. The second shifts to prevention, offering practical guidance on vetting candidates, structuring interviews, writing job descriptions and managing a bookkeeper after hiring. The third breaks down how theft schemes are typically set up and escalated, the warning signs owners should watch for, and what to do once theft is suspected or confirmed, illustrated with real case studies, including several drawn from IRS cases.

Montgomery's message is blunt about the stakes. "Theft by a bookkeeper is a really tough subject to discuss, yet it's much more prevalent than most business owners realize or care to admit," she said. "This is an underreported crime that is very costly to businesses, and can be especially devastating to small businesses." The implication for owners is that the damage is not only financial but structural: by the time inaccuracies surface, records may be too compromised for an accountant to untangle, complicating recovery, insurance claims and any legal action.

Her background extends beyond bookkeeping. Montgomery has consulted with more than 100 clients across real estate, construction, retail and manufacturing, managed large residential and warehouse operations, and helped small business owners navigate PPP loan compliance during the pandemic. That experience, according to the release, shapes the three books into plain-spoken guides rather than academic texts. For an audience of small and mid-sized firms that often lack dedicated internal controls, the series arrives as a practical, experience-based resource rather than a theoretical one, and its emphasis on hiring and management suggests the cost of prevention may be far lower than the cost of discovery.
