Dallas Author Van Norman Releases 'Rocky's Forever Home: Learning to Love Again'

Dallas-based children's author Van Norman has announced the release of his latest book, Rocky's Forever Home: Learning to Love Again, now available in paperback and hardcover through major book retailers. The announcement, made on October 3, 2026, introduces a story that aims to resonate with both children and the adults who read with them, addressing themes of love, trust, and the courage to begin again.

The book follows Rocky, a German Shepherd who has spent his life on the streets and in shelters. After numerous disappointments, Rocky has become guarded and sarcastic, convinced that love is meant for other dogs. His companion, Dottie, a Dalmatian with an optimistic outlook despite growing up in an alley, provides a contrasting perspective. When they arrive together at a new home, their differing worldviews create a dynamic that is both humorous and tender.

The household they enter is populated by a cast of distinct characters: Molly, a graceful Sheltie who has only known a forever home; Bandit, a joyful Beagle; Paris, a sassy Yorkshire Terrier; and Sam, a Basset Hound with a booming voice. Each dog is drawn from a real animal Norman has known, adding authenticity to the narrative. The emotional core of the story centers on Dottie, who slips back through the fence and journeys alone through the city to the alley where she grew up. She carries a mission that is both brave and selfless, and what she brings back serves as proof that love endures across distance and time. For Rocky, witnessing the aftermath challenges everything he believes and marks the story's climax.

Norman explains the motivation behind the book: "This story was written because I believe every child deserves to feel loved, seen, and at home in their own life. Rocky's journey from fear and self-protection to openness and trust mirrors something deeply universal. I hope readers of every age find a piece of themselves in him and find the courage to believe again."

Norman's writing style avoids condescension and false comfort, trusting young readers with complex emotions such as the fear of being sent back, the longing for a sibling left behind, and the ache of wanting to love but being afraid. This approach makes the book a tool for social-emotional learning, suitable for educators, librarians, school counselors, and parents. The book includes vibrant full-color illustrations, interactive coloring pages, and a reader reflection section designed to spark discussion and emotional engagement.

Rocky's Forever Home: Learning to Love Again is available in paperback (ISBN: 9798250492591) and hardcover (ISBN: 9798248659159). It is dedicated to Norman's grandson, Layne Kale Ichiro Lewis Norman, and was made possible with support from his wife Tina and editorial guidance from his Aunt Beth.
