eyeo, a company based in Eindhoven, Netherlands, announced today that it has raised €40 million in Series A funding, bringing its total funding to €55 million. The round is led by Innovation Industries, with participation from existing investors imec.xpand, Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund, QBIC fund, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and Brabant Development Agency (BOM). The funding will support eyeo's efforts to bring its nanophotonic color-splitting technology to market as production-ready sensors.
Traditional image sensors rely on color filter arrays that block approximately 70% of incoming light, a limitation that has persisted for decades. eyeo's technology uses nanophotonics to guide photons directly to individual pixels, capturing all incoming light and enabling full light sensitivity. This breakthrough allows eyeo sensors to capture three times more light, resulting in superior image quality in low-light conditions and native color fidelity.
The technology is compatible with any CMOS sensor platform and enables sub-0.5-micron pixels, making it suitable for ultra-compact, high-performance imaging applications. eyeo targets a $30 billion imaging market, including smartphones, extended reality (XR) devices, smart cities, and other sectors where image quality is critical.
“eyeo is redefining imaging with the world’s most advanced nanophotonic color-splitting technology,” the company stated. “For the first time, image sensors can capture all incoming light, overcoming the 70% light loss imposed by decades-old color filter technology.”
The company has been developing its nanophotonic science for seven years and is now moving to production-ready color-splitting sensors. The imaging market is vast, and eyeo's technology could significantly impact how cameras are designed in smartphones and other devices, potentially enabling smaller camera modules without sacrificing quality.
eyeo is headquartered at High Tech Campus Eindhoven in the Netherlands, with a sensor design center in Antwerp, Belgium. More information about the company can be found at eyeo.tech.
