Bart Davis, founder and CEO of Austin-based 512Financial, joined the latest episode of The Building Texas Show to warn founders that delaying key hires in accounting and HR can jeopardize a successful exit. In an interview published July 16, 2026, Davis told host Justin McKenzie that most Texas startups wait too long to professionalize back-office operations, a mistake that becomes costly when preparing for an acquisition or IPO.
Drawing on his experience running fractional finance for Joel Trammell's portfolio from 2014 to 2021, Davis noted that Trammell's 2018 and 2021 exits demonstrated how early investment in the finance function directly shapes valuation. Davis recalled that when he first worked with Trammell's companies Packet Design and iGrafx, the outsourced accounting produced what he called "random number generator financial statements." He warned that founders cannot repair years of poor bookkeeping on the way out the door.
Davis advocates for a counterintuitive hiring order: a controller and an HR leader should come before product or go-to-market hires. He argues that founders often request a CFO when they actually need a staff accountant at roughly 20 percent of the cost, calling the mismatch "bringing a bazooka to a knife fight." For healthy startups, he recommends spending 2 to 4 percent of top-line revenue on accounting and finance functions.
The conversation also touched on AI's role in finance. Davis noted that his team uses AI daily but has inherited Claude-built financial models "riddled with errors" that only a trained CFO would catch. He advocates an 80/20 approach: let humans drive the 20 percent of work that produces 80 percent of the value.
Davis also highlighted risks around 1099 versus W-2 classification, which he says he sees regularly when onboarding new HR clients. The 2025 acquisitions of Austin PeopleWorks and HireBetter.com were discussed as examples of the 'monetizing churn' thesis.
For founders navigating tighter capital and growing compliance demands, Davis's advice is clear: invest early in the finance and HR functions that separate a clean exit from a broken one. The episode is available on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and all major podcast platforms.
