Frontieras North America and Western Fuels have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop a mine-mouth FASForm™ processing facility at the Dry Fork Mine near Gillette, Wyoming. The proposed facility would use Frontieras’ patented FASForm™ Solid Carbon Fractionation technology to convert coal into ultra-low-sulfur diesel, naphtha, and FASCarbon™, a carbon product. According to the MOU, the partners plan to negotiate long-term agreements covering the facility site, coal feedstock supply of up to approximately 2.7 million tons annually initially, and up to 5.4 million tons at full build-out. Western Fuels would also purchase ultra-low-sulfur diesel produced at the facility and potentially utilize its transportation capabilities to move product streams.
The agreement is a strategic step for Frontieras North America as it seeks to scale its technology across Wyoming and the West through mine-mouth facilities and its FASGEN™ co-location platform for coal-fired power plants. FASForm™ technology employs a continuous, closed-loop process that aims to produce clean fuels and industrial chemicals with zero waste, a stark contrast to traditional coal combustion. By siting the facility at the Dry Fork Mine, the partners can reduce transportation costs and logistical challenges associated with moving coal, while also providing a new revenue stream for the mine and local economy.
The MOU also contemplates that FASCarbon™ produced at the Wyoming facility could be transported to Western Fuels Association member utilities under separate commercial terms or sold into international markets. This flexibility highlights the potential for the technology to supply both domestic and global demand for carbon products, which are used in various industrial applications. The announcement comes as the coal industry faces increasing pressure to reduce emissions and find cleaner ways to utilize the resource. Frontieras North America, headquartered in Houston, Texas, is already constructing its first commercial-scale facility in Mason County, West Virginia, and holds an international patent portfolio spanning five continents.
The proposed Wyoming facility could have significant implications for the region, potentially creating jobs and supporting the local economy while demonstrating a viable path for coal’s continued use in a decarbonizing world. For Western Fuels, a supplier of coal to rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities, this partnership offers a way to provide value to its members while addressing environmental concerns. The project also aligns with broader efforts to develop carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies, as well as the production of synthetic fuels from fossil resources.
While the MOU marks an important milestone, the partners still need to finalize agreements and secure necessary permits. If successful, the facility could serve as a model for other coal-producing regions seeking to transition to cleaner energy solutions without abandoning the economic benefits of coal. As the world moves toward net-zero emissions, technologies like FASForm™ may play a crucial role in bridging the gap between traditional energy sources and a sustainable future.
