Barbaro traced his entrepreneurial identity back to age eight, when his father handed him a knife in the family restaurant kitchen and put him to work. After his father's death in 2007, Barbaro began questioning whether he was living his own dream or his father's. He credited T. Harv Eker's Secrets of the Millionaire Mind with helping him reframe that moment. "Legacy is not something that you leave behind. Legacy is something that you activate today. And when you have that mindset, everything changes," Barbaro said.
The conversation covered why most real estate investors fail by treating properties as a collection of assets rather than a business with a framework. Barbaro described how the 18-month hunt for his first multifamily deal in 2013 shaped the Jake and Gino methodology. He also discussed the pivot from restaurateur to multifamily operator after his father's death, building Barbaro360 alongside his wife and six children as a financial literacy platform, and the Happy Money Podcast, which he co-hosts with his 23-year-old son.
When asked about his current fears, Barbaro admitted that his biggest concern is not a bad deal but the risk of building Barbaro360 poorly and leaving his children with the impression that "business just sucks." He redefined entrepreneurship by highlighting his stay-at-home wife and his 26-year-old missionary daughter, who sells handmade jewelry and holds a massage license, as diverse examples of entrepreneurial spirit.
