An international social media campaign themed "China's Free Trade Port, World-Class Resort Island: Welcome to Cool Hainan" has successfully put Hainan Free Trade Port on the radar of global travelers, drawing a surge of interest from potential visitors. Since the start of the year, the initiative, planned and implemented by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, has published 56 travel-themed pieces of content across multiple social media platforms, amassing over 16 million total exposures.
The campaign strategically targeted key inbound tourist source markets, including Russian-speaking regions, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America, using multilingual accounts in Russian, Thai, Indonesian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. This expansive reach attracted a following of over 52 million users, indicating a growing global curiosity about Hainan's offerings.
Breaking away from traditional promotional methods, the campaign rolled out seven themed series of Hainan tourism content, each featuring practical travel guides and immersive on-site scenarios. The themes evolved monthly, starting with high-end luxury getaways on the Sunshine Coast in January, followed by Li and Miao ethnic Spring Festival customs in February, trendy surfing and aerospace study tours in March, water sports and wellness tourism in April, archaeological and rainforest adventures in May, rainforest self-driving tours and ethnic minority villages in June, and "Ten Signature Marine Tourism Routes" in July. The latter alone achieved over 2.6 million impressions on a single post.
The content not only highlighted diverse attractions such as bays, rainforests, folk customs, health and wellness, and sports, but also incorporated practical travel information, including visa-free policies for 86 countries, temporary permits for foreign driver's licenses, and shopping and duty-free tax refund policies for off-island travel. This integration of scenic highlights with logistical details provided a comprehensive view of what Hainan has to offer.
The response from global social media users has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a strong desire to travel to Hainan. Comments have flooded in asking about visa-free entry, dining options, accommodations, sightseeing spots, and self-driving itineraries. Several users have even stated that Hainan has been added to their travel bucket lists.
According to an official from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province, the campaign aims to build Hainan's international image as a "World-Class Resort Island" and enhance its appeal as an inbound tourism destination. The official emphasized that Hainan possesses tropical coastal tourism resources unique in China, and with the policy advantages of the Free Trade Port, the province will continue to optimize its tourism services and cultivate a consumption environment that meets international standards.
This strategic push comes at a time when global travel is rebounding, and Hainan's proactive approach positions it to capture a significant share of international tourists seeking new and exotic destinations.
