Haltom City's commercial corridors are facing increasing vacancy rates, a situation exacerbated by outdated parking regulations that hinder small business development. Ron Sturgeon, founder of the Haltom United Business Alliance (HUBA), highlights the challenges small businesses face in navigating these regulations, which prevent them from opening or relocating to the city. Despite HUBA's efforts to propose no-cost solutions to the city, including updates to the city code, there has been no follow-up from city leadership.
The stagnation in Haltom City contrasts with actions taken by other Texas cities, such as Dallas, which has eliminated parking requirements to foster economic development and create more walkable neighborhoods. Sturgeon warns that without similar reforms, Haltom City risks further decline in its southern and central areas, potentially leading to increased crime and blight. The situation underscores the importance of local government responsiveness to the needs of small businesses, which are vital for revitalizing commercial districts and strengthening the local tax base.
