Humane Society Silicon Valley Joins Nationwide 'Clear the Shelters' Campaign

Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) is joining a month-long, nationwide campaign named Clear the Shelters to help find loving homes for animals in need. This campaign, in partnership with NBCUniversal Local, unites hundreds of organizations across the country from August 10 to September 10 to promote pet adoption and donations.

Over 6 million companion animals are admitted to animal shelters in the United States each year, with more than 25 million others living in poverty. The 2023 Clear the Shelters campaign successfully found homes for over 150,000 pets and raised nearly $600,000.

HSSV's Senior Director of Operations, Kristen Jahnke, expressed gratitude towards NBCUniversal Local for highlighting the issue of overcrowded shelters. She emphasized the impact of collective action, citing last year's adoption numbers as evidence.

The 2024 campaign marks the 10th anniversary of Clear the Shelters, celebrating over 1 million total pet adoptions. To commemorate this milestone, HSSV is offering a special adoption fee of $50 for all animals over six months old. Each adopted animal will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Additionally, HSSV staff will provide expert pet care tips and post-adoption advice.

HSSV is also promoting its Keeping Families Together initiative, which includes a pet food pantry and a mobile wellness clinic for families needing medical services.
