June is National Candy Month, and the National Confectioners Association (NCA) is encouraging Americans to celebrate the sweetness of summer with their favorite chocolate and candy treats. As the season kicks off with holidays, traditions, and special occasions, NCA's Carly Schildhaus embarked on a nationwide media tour, sharing how these indulgences enhance beloved summer activities.
While consumers understand that chocolate and candy are treats to be enjoyed in moderation, averaging just 40 calories and about one teaspoon of added sugar per day, these confections play a unique role in creating memorable moments. Whether camping, taking beach vacations, embarking on road trips, or visiting family, most Americans will bring along their favorite treats for the fun.
Gummy candy, chocolate, taffy, lollipops, and hard candy top the list of consumers' favorite summer treats. A staggering 86% of people going on a road trip will pack chocolate and candy, 82% will share treats during family visits, and 68% will hit the beach with their favorites in tow. For campers, 78% say they will indulge in chocolate and candy, with s'mores being a quintessential summer experience. Of those who enjoy s'mores, 78% prefer classic milk or dark chocolate, while 22% opt for more innovative ingredients.
To dress up their ice cream cones, consumers favor chocolate pieces, chocolate sauce, peanut butter candy, and gummy candy as preferred toppings.
