Kiora Pharmaceuticals' KIO-300 Shows Promise in Preclinical Epilepsy Model

Kiora Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: KPRX) today announced preclinical data demonstrating that KIO-300, part of its novel ion channel modulator platform, significantly suppressed seizure-associated electrophysiological activity in an ex vivo temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) model. The findings were presented in a poster at the Epilepsy Foundation Pipeline Conference, held June 18-19, 2026, in Leesburg, VA.

The data showed a significant reduction in epileptiform activity, suggesting potential for KIO-300 in epilepsy treatment. KIO-300 is the active pharmaceutical ingredient of KIO-301, which is currently in a Phase 2 clinical program for vision restoration in patients with gene mutation-agnostic Retinitis Pigmentosa. This expansion into epilepsy highlights the versatility of Kiora's ion channel modulator platform.

Temporal lobe epilepsy is one of the most common forms of epilepsy, often resistant to current treatments. The preclinical results offer hope for new therapeutic options. Kiora's platform targets ion channels, which are critical for neuronal signaling, and modulation could correct abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

The company is a clinical-stage biotechnology firm focused on advanced therapies for retinal diseases, but this research indicates broader potential. KIO-301, a molecular photoswitch, aims to restore vision in inherited and age-related retinal degeneration. KIO-104, another candidate, targets macular edema through DHODH inhibition.

The Epilepsy Foundation Pipeline Conference is a key venue for emerging epilepsy treatments. Kiora's presentation there underscores the significance of these findings to the epilepsy community. Investors and researchers are watching closely as the company explores additional indications for its ion channel modulators.

Kiora plans to continue evaluating KIO-300 in further preclinical and potentially clinical studies. The company encourages stakeholders to follow updates on its website and social media. Forward-looking statements involve risks, including clinical trial timelines and regulatory approvals, as detailed in SEC filings.
