Lamborghini has officially canceled plans to produce a fully electric supercar after concluding that customer interest in such vehicles remains minimal. The decision marks a significant strategic shift for the luxury automaker, which had previously introduced the Lanzador concept as its entry into the electric performance car market nearly three years ago.
According to Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, the company's research revealed that most Lamborghini buyers strongly prefer vehicles powered by traditional V8 or V12 engines. Winkelmann stated that interest in fully electric supercars among the brand's customer base is close to zero, creating substantial concern for a company whose identity is built around powerful engines and emotional driving experiences.
The cancellation follows more than a year of review during which Lamborghini consulted with dealers and loyal customers. The company had initially planned to release a production version of the electric Lanzador in 2028, but market conditions prompted a delay to 2029 before the project was ultimately halted at the end of 2025. Management determined that investing heavily in a product with uncertain demand would create unacceptable financial risk.
Despite abandoning its full electric vehicle plans, Lamborghini is not retreating from electrification entirely. The company is shifting its focus to plug-in hybrid technology, with a hybrid version of the Lanzador now in development for release later this decade. This approach allows the brand to combine electric assistance with traditional gasoline engines, maintaining the performance characteristics customers expect.
The same strategy applies to the next generation of the Lamborghini Urus SUV, which will continue as a plug-in hybrid rather than transitioning to a fully electric vehicle. Lamborghini believes this solution balances environmental responsibility with customer expectations while preserving the emotional sound and feel that define the brand's identity.
The decision comes as European car manufacturers face increasing pressure to reduce emissions and transition toward electric vehicles. Lamborghini's move highlights the tension between regulatory demands and consumer preferences in the luxury performance segment. For companies like Lucid Motors that have only electric models in their lineups, the challenge remains to innovate and attract buyers in a market where traditional preferences persist.
By prioritizing customer preference over full electrification, Lamborghini has chosen evolution over revolution, ensuring that performance and passion remain central to its future models. The decision underscores the complex dynamics shaping the automotive industry's transition to electrification, particularly in segments where emotional connection to traditional driving experiences remains strong.
