LION Smart Production GmbH, a subsidiary of LION E-Mobility Group, is ramping up its stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) business with the addition of two experienced executives. The company announced on Tuesday that Winfried Wahl will serve as Head of BESS Strategy, while Sebastian Bujnoch will take on the role of Manager Business and Sales Development, focusing on international supplier relationships and customer development across Europe.
The hires underscore the strategic importance of the BESS segment as a key growth pillar for LION Smart, which aims to develop high-performance, scalable storage solutions for the energy transition. Stationary energy storage systems are critical for integrating renewable energy, stabilizing power grids, and enabling future-proof energy supply concepts, according to the company.
Winfried Wahl brings over 18 years of experience in photovoltaic systems and stationary energy storage markets. A graduate electrical engineer from RWTH Aachen University, he has expertise across the value chain, including technology positioning, market entry strategies, bankability, and regulatory requirements. He previously played key roles in the European market entry of companies like Hithium and LONGi, and contributed to developments such as the BNEF Tier 1 listing and reinsurance eligibility through Munich Re. He also co-authored the IEA World Energy Outlook Special Report 2024 and serves on the PV Magazine jury.
Since June 2026, Wahl has been responsible for strategic development of the BESS business at LION Smart in Garching, focusing on refining strategic positioning, developing competitive product and business models, and expanding partnerships.
Sebastian Bujnoch adds extensive international leadership and industry experience in manufacturing, operations, and the battery sector. His 16 years of experience in China and Asian manufacturing markets provide deep insights into industrial scaling, supply chain structures, and cross-border collaboration. At LION Smart, he will build and scale the BESS business unit, strengthen strategic relationships with Chinese suppliers, and broaden the customer portfolio in Europe.
“With Winfried Wahl and Sebastian Bujnoch, we are gaining two individuals who combine strategic market insight, international experience, and operational execution capabilities in an ideal way,” said Dr. Joachim Damasky, CEO of LION E-Mobility AG. “Their expertise will play an important role in systematically building our BESS business and positioning LION Smart as a strong partner in the European energy storage market.”
LION Smart, which already offers a 5 MWh container solution and immersion-cooled battery technology, is positioning itself to meet growing demand for energy storage. The company operates automated module assembly lines at its own production facility in Germany. LION E-Mobility AG is listed on stock exchanges in Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg.
