LION Smart's new 30 MWh battery storage projects and its planned BESS as a Service offering highlight the growing momentum behind stationary energy storage in Germany's renewable energy transition.
LION Smart Secures 30 MWh Battery Storage Projects in Germany, Expands to BESS as a Service

LION Smart Production GmbH, a subsidiary of LION E-Mobility AG, has won three additional battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Germany, each with a capacity of 10 MWh, for a total of 30 MWh. The projects were secured in the third quarter of 2026 and are scheduled for completion and grid connection in the first quarter of 2027, according to a company announcement distributed via NEWMEDIAWIRE.

The three projects represent distinct applications of stationary storage. One 10 MWh system will be co-located with an existing photovoltaic plant. A second 10 MWh project combines battery storage with a new photovoltaic system. The third is a standalone 10 MWh storage installation. These varied configurations underscore the flexibility of battery storage, which can be paired with renewable generation or deployed independently to support grid stability and energy arbitrage.

LION Smart acts as a system integrator, providing tailored solutions that cover the entire project lifecycle: consulting, system design, engineering, integration, commissioning, and ongoing service and maintenance. Each container undergoes approval by an in-house engineering team according to European quality standards, and the company backs its systems with performance guarantees. This end-to-end approach positions LION Smart to serve a diverse customer base, including independent power producers, solar and wind farm operators, traditional utilities, and municipal utilities.

The company is also preparing to launch “BESS as a Service,” a model that allows operators of photovoltaic and wind farms to use a battery storage system without making their own capital investment. Under this arrangement, LION Smart assumes the technical risk and provides service for the storage system, while operators gain the opportunity to generate additional storage revenues alongside their income from renewable energy sales. The focus is on a one-stop solution tailored to each application, with the concrete structure and economic potential assessed on a project-specific basis. LION Smart will present this offering at the Solar Plus Forum on 24–25 November 2026 in Berlin.

The news matters because it signals continued demand for stationary battery storage as Germany pushes to integrate more renewable energy into its grid. Storage helps smooth the intermittency of solar and wind power, and business models like BESS as a Service could lower the barrier for renewable operators to add storage, potentially accelerating deployment. For LION E-Mobility AG, a listed manufacturer of lithium-ion battery packs, the project wins build on previous success in the BESS sector and demonstrate its ability to scale in a competitive market. As utilities and independent power producers seek to optimize renewable assets, integrated storage offerings could become a key differentiator. LION Smart’s latest wins and its upcoming service model suggest the company is positioning itself at the center of that trend.
