In a continued effort to combat lung cancer, the Lung Cancer Foundation of America (LCFA) and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) have announced $400,000 in grants to two early-career researchers. The funding, awarded during World Lung Cancer Month, supports projects that address two critical challenges: detecting lung cancer earlier and overcoming treatment resistance. The recipients, Dr. Jared Mayers of Fred Hutch Cancer Center and Dr. Jaime L. Schneider of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, each receive $200,000 through the Early Career Researcher (ECR) grant program.
The investment comes at a time when lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, claiming a life in the United States every 4.2 minutes. Competition for research funding is fierce, and many innovative ideas fail to advance due to lack of resources. By targeting these early-career investigators, LCFA and IASLC aim to accelerate the pace of discovery. Kim Norris, co-founder and president of LCFA, emphasized the necessity of supporting these scientists: "Supporting early-career investigators is not just a strategic priority. It is a necessity for the future of oncology. By investing in these researchers, we are accelerating the pace of discovery and ensuring that promising ideas in metabolic tracking and drug resistance can move from the laboratory to the clinic, where they are needed most."
Dr. Mayers's project focuses on the lung microbiome—bacteria that reside in the lungs in tiny amounts, making them difficult to study. He is developing highly sensitive techniques to analyze these microbes and understand how they may influence lung cancer development. By mapping their contributions, his team hopes to discover new ways to prevent the disease. Dr. Mayers explained his motivation: "We don't get new drugs, we don't get new therapies, we don't get longer lives, better quality lives, more time with family unless we invest in the upfront groundwork."
Dr. Schneider is investigating how lung cancer cells adapt to survive after treatment, focusing on cellular energy management. Her goal is to identify weak points in cancer's metabolic pathways to design therapies that prevent resistance. This could lead to more effective and longer-lasting options for patients whose cancers have become resistant to standard treatments. Dr. Schneider was inspired by the recent advances in thoracic oncology: "I was simply blown away by the tremendous arsenal of new drugs that had just come out that were really changing patient lives."
The ECR grant program has a track record of high impact. LCFA reports a "multiplier effect" of 13 times the initial investment. Since its inception, the program has awarded 25 grants totaling $4.6 million, which has helped researchers secure over $50 million in additional funding from other organizations. This demonstrates that small grants can lead to significant advances. For Dr. Mayers and Dr. Schneider, this funding provides not only immediate support but also a foundation for future major research awards.
