Marine Toys for Tots Encourages Outdoor Play Through 'Give and Go' Initiative During National Fishing Week

As summer begins, Marine Toys for Tots is using National Fishing Week to highlight the importance of outdoor play through its Give and Go: Outdoor Adventures Start with You initiative. The program aims to provide underserved children with opportunities to explore nature and build life skills through recreational activities.

In support of this initiative, Toys for Tots partnered with local coordinator Gina Capate to host a fishing event in Maple Shade, New Jersey, for 24 foster children. The event, called “Cops and Boppers,” involved volunteers, local leaders, and law enforcement officers who mentored the children in fishing. Each child received a fishing pole and a bag of supplies, but organizers emphasized the deeper impact: fostering a sense of belonging and trust.

“This fishing event was about more than spending time on the water—it was about creating moments where children feel supported, encouraged, and included,” said Lieutenant General Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity to spark confidence that can last a lifetime.”

The Give and Go initiative transforms donations into outdoor gear such as fishing poles, soccer balls, books, and games, which help children develop confidence, patience, and curiosity. For millions of underserved children, access to these enriching experiences is limited, making the program crucial for their development.

“Outdoor experiences help children discover confidence, patience, and a sense of possibility that stays with them long after the day ends,” Laster said. “Every child deserves the chance to step outside, try something new, and realize what they are capable of.”

Toys for Tots runs year-round programs to ensure children have access to toys and activities that promote growth. The organization encourages public donations to support its mission. More information is available at toysfortots.org.
