TurningPoint Energy and Pivot Energy have launched a 2.9-megawatt community solar project in Maryland that will provide clean energy to local residents while supporting the state's renewable energy goals and delivering significant community investments.

The completion of a 2.9-megawatt direct current solar farm in Clarksville, Maryland represents a significant milestone in the state's renewable energy expansion, serving as the first operational project in a six-project, 16.6 MWdc portfolio developed by TurningPoint Energy and owned by Pivot Energy. The project, which celebrated its energization with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 25, will generate approximately 4.25 million kilowatt hours of affordable renewable energy annually, enough to power the equivalent of up to 370 Maryland homes.
This solar development plays a crucial role in helping Maryland achieve its ambitious goal of 50% renewable electricity by 2030. The project's significance extends beyond clean energy generation, as it operates under Maryland's innovative Community Solar Energy Generating System Pilot Program, which expands access to clean energy for Baltimore Gas & Electric customers who might not otherwise have solar options. Subscribers to this community solar farm will save an average of 10% off their electricity bills annually, demonstrating the economic benefits of renewable energy adoption.
The project incorporates sustainable land management practices, including sheep grazing, native pollinator planting, and other dual-use initiatives that ensure long-term land productivity. Howard County Councilmember Deb Jung emphasized the importance of local energy production, stating that the county has adopted "zoning regulations that are among the most solar friendly in the State" despite its smaller size.
Beyond environmental benefits, the project includes substantial community investment, with TurningPoint Energy and Pivot Energy jointly committing $120,000 in donations to local organizations. Recipients include the Autism Society of Maryland, Bryant Woods Elementary School PTA, Community Action Council of Howard County, and several other community organizations. Debbie Brown, Executive Director of the Fuel Fund of Maryland, noted that Pivot's $18,000 contribution will "help keep 72 Maryland households connected and empowered" in 2025.
The solar array consists of nearly 5,500 solar modules covering an area equivalent to nearly 10 football fields, representing a substantial addition to Maryland's solar infrastructure. With the project already fully subscribed by 11 participants, including a local church, it demonstrates strong community support for renewable energy solutions. The successful implementation of this project establishes a replicable model for future community solar developments across Maryland and other states seeking to expand renewable energy access while supporting local communities.
