Michigan's Upper Peninsula (UP) experienced significant economic growth in 2023, with tourism generating $1.6 billion in visitor spending, representing a 7.7% increase from the previous year. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation's analysis highlights the region's growing appeal as a travel destination and its critical role in the local economy.

Mackinac County led visitor spending at $309.4 million, followed by Marquette County at $268.3 million. Menominee County demonstrated the most substantial year-over-year growth at 11.8%, signaling expanding tourism potential. The UP's visitor spending constituted 5.5% of Michigan's total visitor economy.

Tourism's economic impact extends beyond direct spending. The sector supported 11,643 direct jobs and a total of 17,049 tourism-related positions, representing 11% of the UP's workforce. Mackinac and Keweenaw counties were particularly dependent on tourism employment, with 34.2% and 32.2% of jobs in the sector, respectively.

Spending patterns revealed strong post-pandemic recovery across multiple sectors. Lodging generated $484 million, with Mackinac County leading at $116.5 million. Dining experiences and outdoor recreation also saw significant investments, totaling $62.6 million and $351.9 million, respectively.

The tourism sector generated $392.3 million in direct wages and $654.8 million in total labor income. Visitor spending contributed $170.9 million in state and local tax revenue, providing crucial support for public services and infrastructure.

As travel demand continues to rise, the Upper Peninsula is positioned for sustained growth by expanding tourism offerings, enhancing outdoor experiences, and promoting sustainable travel strategies.
