Michigan's Upper Peninsula (U.P.) is once again in the running for USA TODAY's 10Best 'Best Snow Destination' title, following its victory in 2023. The nomination arrives at a critical juncture for the region, as it seeks to rebound from the economic impact of last winter's record low snowfall on local tourism and small businesses.
Tom Nemacheck, executive director of the Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association, emphasizes the significance of this potential win, stating, 'Winning this award again isn't just a badge of honor — it's an invaluable opportunity for our local economy.' He highlights the struggles faced by businesses dependent on winter tourism during the previous season and expresses optimism for a return to the U.P.'s renowned winter conditions.
The Upper Peninsula typically receives over 200 inches of snow annually, creating ideal conditions for a variety of winter activities across its 3,000 miles of groomed trails, lakes, and peaks. The region offers diverse attractions for winter enthusiasts, including snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and opportunities to explore frozen waterfalls and ice-fishing spots. With nine ski resorts catering to all skill levels and additional adventure options like dog sledding and ice climbing, the U.P. presents a comprehensive winter destination.
This nomination and potential win carry significant implications for the region's tourism industry and local economy. A successful campaign could help attract visitors from across the United States and beyond, providing a much-needed boost to businesses that rely on winter tourism. The recognition would not only showcase the U.P.'s natural beauty and recreational offerings but also support the recovery of the local economy following a challenging season.
The competition runs from November 11 to December 9, 2024, with daily voting allowed on USA TODAY's 10Best website. The winner will be announced on December 11, 2024. This campaign represents more than just a contest; it's an opportunity for the Upper Peninsula to reassert its position as a premier winter destination and to support the livelihoods of its residents and businesses.
