MMRF Raises Over $110,000 in 250-Mile Cycling Fundraiser for Multiple Myeloma Research

The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) has successfully raised more than $110,000 through its eighth annual Road to Victories cycling event, which took place on August 24, 2024. The 250-mile ride through California's Wine Country brought together a diverse team of 18 participants, including multiple myeloma patients, family members, healthcare providers, and supporters.

Multiple myeloma, the second most common blood cancer, affects plasma cells in the bone marrow and can spread throughout the body. The funds raised from this endurance event will be crucial in accelerating research, raising awareness, providing patient education, and offering community support for those affected by the disease.

Michael Andreini, President and CEO of the MMRF, emphasized the importance of such events in driving progress towards finding cures. The ride, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, covered scenic routes through Sonoma, Napa, Yountville, Bodega Bay, and along the Pacific Coast, showcasing not only the beauty of the region but also the determination of the participants.

Rob Bultje, Regional Business Director at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, described the event as more than just a bike ride, highlighting its transformative impact on participants. The diverse team of riders, which included six multiple myeloma patients, demonstrated the strength and resilience of the myeloma community.

This fundraising effort is part of the MMRF's broader mission to accelerate cures for every multiple myeloma patient. Since its inception, the foundation has raised over $600 million for research, opened nearly 100 clinical trials, and helped bring more than 15 FDA-approved therapies to market. These efforts have contributed to tripling the life expectancy of myeloma patients.

The success of the Road to Victories event underscores the ongoing need for research funding and community support in the fight against multiple myeloma. It also highlights the power of collaborative efforts between nonprofit organizations, healthcare companies, and individuals in making significant strides towards improving patient outcomes and ultimately finding a cure for this challenging disease.
