National Rainbow College Fund Forms Advisory Council to Support LGBTQ+ Students

The National Rainbow College Fund, powered by San Diego Foundation (SDF), has announced the formation of an Advisory Council to oversee its groundbreaking scholarship program for LGBTQ+ students. This initiative marks a significant step in addressing the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students in their pursuit of higher education.

The Advisory Council brings together prominent community members with diverse expertise to guide the first scholarship program exclusively supporting LGBTQ+ students, regardless of their public sexual identity. Mark Stuart, SDF President and CEO, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Now, more than ever, LGBTQ+ students face unique challenges such as social acceptance, mental health issues and family rejection that can hinder their ability to afford college and impact their long-term economic stability and mobility."

The council includes notable figures such as Jarrett Barrios from the American Red Cross, Amanda Montgomery of Sycamore Tree Capital Partners, Dr. Becky Petitt from the University of California San Diego, Joyce Rowland, former Sempra Energy executive, and Allen Young from Cox Communications. These members will contribute to advocacy, community relations, strategy, and fundraising efforts for the scholarship program.

Set to launch in California in 2025, the National Rainbow College Fund aims to provide $2,500 scholarships to selected students. The program's vision extends beyond California, with plans to become a national source of financial aid for LGBTQ+ students attending technical schools, colleges, or universities of their choice.
