The National Rainbow College Fund (NRCF) has announced its inaugural scholarship program designed exclusively for LGBTQ+ students in California, offering a groundbreaking opportunity to support higher education access for this community.
The scholarship will distribute up to $500,000 in awards, providing 200 students with $2,500 each to support their educational expenses. Eligible students include high school seniors, current college students, and adult re-entry students who have lived in California for at least one year.
Funds can be used for tuition, books, fees, room and board, and other educational expenses. The scholarship does not require repayment, making it a critical resource for students facing financial challenges.
Mark Stuart, President and CEO of San Diego Foundation, emphasized the program's commitment to student privacy and support. The scholarship application process prioritizes students' comfort, recognizing the complex challenges LGBTQ+ students may face in disclosing their sexual identity.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate financial need by completing either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), California DREAM Act Application, or Federal Student Aid Estimator Tool. Students must plan to enroll in at least six units at an accredited institution in the United States.
The application period runs from January 15, 2025, to March 5, 2025. This initiative represents a significant step toward addressing economic barriers and supporting educational opportunities for LGBTQ+ students in California.
