The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal and one of the world’s leading scientific publications in cardiovascular medicine. Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher, will help shape the journal’s editorial direction and continue its commitment to publishing rigorous, practice-changing science.
Maron is recognized globally for his mechanistic and clinical advances in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure and cardiomyopathy. He serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also holds the role of co-executive director of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing. Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led Circulation since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004-2016.
“Dr. Maron’s appointment underscores the American Heart Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science shaping the future of cardiovascular medicine,” said Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee. “His vision, scientific breadth and dedication to robust research and innovation position Circulation for optimal success in its next chapter.”
Maron emphasized his commitment to forging a new path for the journal, stating, “Our mission is to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science and medicine published in Circulation, and fast track that information to our readers with additional transparency.”
Key new features of Circulation will include a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician’s Corner for real-world practice guidance, graphic abstracts for all research articles, and a Patient’s Corner for the public. The journal will also implement a streamlined submission process with an accelerated and more transparent review timeline, expanded weekly eTOC alerts with brief summaries, and video commentaries for select manuscripts.
Maron is joined by a new editorial team, including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. Additionally, 10 deputy editors will oversee specific topic sections, including AI for Process and Science, led by Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA.
This change in leadership is significant because Circulation is a cornerstone of cardiovascular research, influencing clinical practice and policy worldwide. The new features aim to make the journal more accessible and useful to clinicians, researchers, and the public, potentially accelerating the translation of research into practice. The appointment of a specialist in pulmonary vascular disease also signals a continued focus on this under-recognized area of heart health.
Maron’s scientific impact includes co-authoring more than 260 publications, serving as principal investigator for federally funded research for over two decades, and holding six patents. He brings substantial editorial experience from roles with journals such as The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, and JACC.
The American Heart Association publishes 14 scientific journals, each editorially independent. More information about the Association’s financial support is available here.
