A new website, Steal the Line, is introducing a unique daily public platform where a single sentence occupies the page and can be replaced for a price, with the final version permanently archived at midnight. The site, accessible at stealtheline.com, aims to offer an alternative to traditional pay-to-rank boards.
Each day, the page starts with a sentence available for $5. Users can replace that sentence by paying at least $5 more than the current price. The price escalates throughout the day as multiple users compete to have their sentence displayed. At midnight, the current sentence is permanently printed on "The Wall" as that date's entry, and cannot be edited. A new edition opens at $5 the following day.
The concept is simple: the first steal of the day costs $5, and any subsequent steal must exceed the current price by at least $5. Payments are in whole U.S. dollars, sentences are limited to 140 characters, and links are not allowed. There are no user accounts, making the process straightforward and accessible.
One of the key features is that each date on The Wall can be claimed only once. This means significant dates like Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, or the night of a major rivalry game cannot be reprinted. Afternoon buyers get a temporary billboard, but the person holding the line at midnight secures a permanent place in the public calendar.
The site's founder, Mark, explains that Steal the Line was built as an alternative to pay-to-rank boards that keep permanent prices climbing until only the highest bidder remains. "There is no 2nd place," he says. "This page is cheap again every morning on purpose. The archive is a calendar of sentences that survived the night, not a list of companies."
Each printed line becomes part of a public archive, which serves as a historical record of what people chose to immortalize. For example, a printed edition might read: "December 31 — She said yes." Or "October 10 — Tonight the town is ours." If a day ends with no paid sentence, the date is marked "Unclaimed," adding to the site's unique charm.
Steal the Line opens a new edition at 12:00:01 a.m. each day, and the current edition and countdown are published on the website. This innovative approach to public expression and competition offers a fresh way for individuals to make a mark, if only for a day.
