The Sea Tow Foundation has released the third installment of its 'Sober Skipper: Why It Matters' video series, featuring professional wakeboarder Thomas Herman. The video, launched during National Safe Boating Week, focuses on the critical importance of remaining sober while operating watercraft.
According to U.S. Coast Guard statistics, men between 24 and 50 years old represent the demographic most at risk for boating under the influence (BUI) incidents. The campaign specifically targets this group to reduce potential accidents and fatalities on the water.
Professional athlete Thomas Herman provides a unique perspective in the video, emphasizing how sobriety directly impacts safety and performance in water sports. By showcasing a professional athlete's commitment to responsible boating, the foundation aims to change behaviors and promote safer maritime practices.
Gail R. Kulp, Executive Director of the Sea Tow Foundation, underscored the importance of the campaign, noting that water sports require focus, control, and quick decision-making. The video series serves as an educational tool to remind boaters that responsible choices can prevent potential tragedies.
The campaign coincides with National Safe Boating Week, scheduled from May 17-23, 2025, strategically timed to reach boaters at the beginning of the summer season. By leveraging the influence of a professional athlete, the Sea Tow Foundation hopes to create meaningful awareness about the dangers of boating under the influence.
