Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) is moving its lead drug candidate, Lucid-MS, into a Phase 2 clinical trial for multiple sclerosis, according to comments made by Co-Founder and Executive Co-Chair Anthony Durkacz on The BioMedWire Podcast. The trial will be the first time the drug is tested in patients with multiple sclerosis, marking a significant milestone for the company and potentially for the treatment landscape of the disease.
Durkacz explained that Lucid-MS targets myelin, the protective sheath around nerve fibers that is damaged in multiple sclerosis. Preclinical models have shown the drug to both prevent and reverse myelin degradation. If the Phase 2 trial demonstrates similar effects in humans, it could offer a new approach to treating a disease that affects millions worldwide. The global multiple sclerosis therapeutics market is expected to grow as demand for effective treatments rises, and Quantum BioPharma’s entry into clinical testing positions it as a notable player in this space.
In addition to its MS program, Quantum BioPharma is also focused on unbuzzd™, a product designed to accelerate alcohol metabolism. Durkacz highlighted clinical results for the product and noted that Quantum owns approximately 20% of the company behind it, Unbuzzd Wellness Inc. The agreement includes a 7% royalty on sales until payments to Quantum total $250 million, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. This arrangement provides Quantum with a long-term revenue stream from a consumer health product that addresses the large and growing hangover remedy market.
Quantum retains 100% of the rights to develop similar products or alternative formulations specifically for pharmaceutical and medical uses, which could open additional opportunities in the alcohol misuse disorder space. The company’s dual focus on neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, as well as alcohol misuse, reflects a strategy to build a diverse portfolio of assets at different stages of development.
For investors, the progress of Lucid-MS and the commercial potential of unbuzzd™ are key catalysts to watch. The latest news and updates relating to QNTM are available in the company’s newsroom at https://ibn.fm/QNTM. To view the full press release, visit https://ibn.fm/ovRTM.
