Rainbird Development Company and Rainbird Village Municipality have partnered to build a $400 million resident-owned producer cooperative in Utah County. The project aims to create a prototype 'Home Rule' community, setting a new standard for 'Thrivability' as defined by author Michelle Holliday in her book, The Age of Thrivability.
Rainbird Village conducted an extensive SWOT analysis of various community models, including ecovillages, co-housing, communes, and company towns, identifying their strengths, weaknesses, and longevity. The Mondragon Cooperative, a global network of producer cooperatives from Spain, emerged as the most successful model in terms of scalability and well-being metrics.
The new community will adopt the strengths of the Mondragon Cooperative, including a governance model that combines limited hierarchy, employee ownership, and liquid democracy. This model aims to achieve a regenerative system, focusing on restoration and continuous improvement rather than just maintaining the status quo.
The community will offer various services and benefits to its residents, who will all be employee-owners. These include jobs in municipal operations management, fresh and value-added food production, crafts through maker spaces, education, healthcare, and recreation. Housing will be provided as a benefit of employee ownership, eliminating significant expenses like mortgage payments and property taxes. Instead of traditional housing equity, residents will earn stock equity in the cooperative, aligning their prosperity with their productivity.
Other notable features include access to fresh and value-added food, education for residents and their families, healthcare services, and membership in a municipal credit union. These benefits are designed to save residents significant costs, allowing them to thrive in their vocations and live in a supportive community.
Harrison Quigley, Co-founder of Rainbird Development, emphasized that this model could free people from the economic constraints of conventional society, enabling them to thrive in a community that supports and celebrates their successes.
The project aims to move beyond the concept of a 'Utopia,' which denotes a static state of perfection, to a 'Protopia,' a society that continuously improves because of its members' freedom to innovate and thrive.
Rainbird Development has identified a location in Utah County ideal for rapidly implementing this prototype and is seeking funding for Phase One, which includes acquisition, development, and the launch of immediate municipal operations.
