Randy C. Earll, a veteran actor and singer with over 50 years of community theater experience, has released his debut book, Garage People and Other Things I Don't Understand. Published by Authors Arcade, the collection of 22 short essays offers a humorous yet thoughtful look at the quirks of modern life, blending lighthearted observations with pointed social commentary.
Earll, who has appeared in films alongside Burt Reynolds and worked as a radio personality and stadium announcer, writes with the same natural timing and warmth he brings to the stage. The book's title essay explores the phenomenon of neighbors who sit in garages watching the world go by—a common sight in Florida, where Earll resides. Other chapters tackle topics as varied as the puzzling persistence of .99 pricing, the mystery of why burgundy cars seem to lose hubcaps more often, and the Southern habit of calling strangers "Bud."
But the book also delves into more serious matters. Earll questions why presidential campaigns spend billions while children go hungry, and why politicians who prioritize education often cut school budgets first. "If you're anything like me, there are many things in this world you don't understand," Earll writes in the introduction. "Things that, to some folks, seem to be normal and natural but make me stop and say, 'Why?'"
The tonal range of the book—from the genuinely important to the delightfully absurd—makes it an engaging read. In one chapter, Earll ponders the logic behind medications that cause more side effects than they cure, and in another, he examines the philosophical gymnastics required to understand faiths with strict capacity caps on Heaven. The final chapter recounts a poignant moment when a hotel clerk denied a discounted room to a uniformed soldier home on leave, despite rows of empty rooms. This quiet gut-punch reminds readers that beneath the humor lies a compassionate heart.
Earll's background in entertainment shines through. A veteran of community theater, he studied acting under Burt Reynolds and appeared in the film Hollow Creek alongside him. He has also written a musical, COMMUNITY The Musical, and recorded a Gospel music CD titled For Every Man. His writing style mirrors his performance style: genuine, unfiltered, and with impeccable timing.
Garage People and Other Things I Don't Understand is a relatable collection for anyone who has ever felt baffled by everyday life. As Earll humorously concludes, "The one thing I do know is that even if I wanted to become one [a Garage Person], I couldn't. My garage has too much stuff in it." The book is available through Authors Arcade and more information can be found on his Facebook and Instagram pages.
