SBF AG, a publicly traded German specialist in rolling stock interiors, lighting, electromechanics and sensor technology, has received a new order from Polish rolling stock manufacturer PESA to outfit 90 new trams for Krakow. The contract is valued at approximately 6 million euros, according to a company announcement distributed via NEWMEDIAWIRE.
The order covers trams in three- and four-car configurations. Production is scheduled to begin with the first delivery planned for March 2027, and deliveries are expected to continue through 2030. SBF will supply the interior ceilings, including the air conditioning ducts, the interior lighting, and the support structure for the new platform.
The deal matters for SBF because it broadens its customer base to include yet another leading European vehicle manufacturer. Robert Stocklinger, Member of the Management Board of SBF AG, said: "Our partnership with PESA is a strong testament to the reliability and quality of our services. This expands our customer base to include yet another leading European vehicle manufacturer. The contract demonstrates that our system expertise in interior headliners and lighting is in demand even on new vehicle platforms."
For the wider rail supply industry, the Krakow contract signals continued investment in new tram platforms across Europe and highlights the role of Tier 1 system suppliers in equipping those vehicles. SBF describes itself as a Tier 1 systems supplier and development partner that provides complex interior, ceiling and lighting systems "Made in Germany" to the world's leading rolling stock manufacturers. The company notes that development and manufacturing take place almost exclusively at its own facilities in Germany and Europe, a level of vertical integration it says is increasingly a key criterion for clients in the critical infrastructure sector when awarding contracts.
The Krakow order is the second joint project between SBF and PESA, following a tram project for Leipzig. SBF sees potential in the collaboration for further projects in the interior design of trams. Beyond rolling stock, SBF operates in public and industrial lighting, where it provides intelligent and customized LED systems for industrial, municipal and infrastructure applications, particularly at train stations and transportation hubs. It also develops and manufactures customer-specific electronic assemblies and devices at its Flensburg location in its sensor technology and electromechanics segment.
