Rising food costs are making it increasingly difficult for families to maintain a healthy diet, with about 60% of Americans citing the expense of nutritious food as their main obstacle. The American Heart Association, through Arlen Vanessa Marin, M.S., R.D., emphasizes the importance of creative, budget-friendly strategies to enjoy heart-healthy meals without sacrificing flavor or tradition.
Key recommendations include opting for beans, legumes, tofu, and tempeh as affordable protein sources, and choosing brown rice, quinoa, or barley over white rice for better heart health. The association also highlights the nutritional value and cost-effectiveness of canned, dried, and frozen foods, which can reduce waste and provide essential nutrients. These suggestions aim to help families navigate the challenges of rising food prices while promoting heart health and nutritional well-being.
