The Smiles for Life campaign has launched its 29th annual initiative, providing patients worldwide with an opportunity to enhance their smiles while supporting children's health charities. Running from March 1 through June 30, this program represents dentistry's most successful charitable effort, having raised more than $51 million since its inception in 1998.
Organized by The Crown Council's charitable arm, Smiles for Life unites dentists, patients, and dental manufacturers to benefit local and global children's health initiatives. When patients schedule teeth whitening treatments with participating Crown Council dentists during the campaign period, or teeth straightening treatments at any time, member dentists donate their time and expertise entirely.
Strategic partner Ultradent Products, Inc., manufacturer of Opalescence tooth whitening systems, contributes 100 percent of the whitening materials, ensuring that the entire cost of each treatment goes directly to the Smiles for Life Foundation. Fifty percent of proceeds benefit seriously ill, disabled, and underprivileged children internationally, while the remaining 50 percent stays within each dentist's local community, with dentists selecting their preferred beneficiary charities.
For patients seeking orthodontic solutions, Smiles for Life partners with Tréz clear aligners, with a portion of each treatment cost donated directly to the foundation. This comprehensive approach addresses both cosmetic dental concerns and broader health initiatives simultaneously.
The campaign's impact extends across multiple continents, with the Smiles for Life Foundation supporting oral health and other programs benefiting economically-disadvantaged children in countries including the Dominican Republic, Nepal, Bolivia, and Guatemala. Domestically, the foundation maintains a longstanding partnership with the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation, which supports Child Life Zones in children's hospitals across the United States.
Since 1998, Smiles for Life dentists have supported more than 600 local children's charities while working to increase access to dental care and improve global health and wellness. The campaign demonstrates how professional dental networks can leverage routine cosmetic procedures to generate substantial charitable funding while addressing both aesthetic and health-related dental needs.
Greg Anderson, director of The Crown Council, emphasized the program's dual benefits, stating that it offers "this unique opportunity to do good simply by having teeth whitened or straightened." The campaign's success relies on the coordinated efforts of dental professionals, corporate sponsors, and patients who participate in what has become a model for charitable initiatives within the healthcare industry.
