SMT Scharf Cuts FY2026 Forecast as Mining Investment Slump Weighs on Results

SMT Scharf AG, a leading supplier of transport and logistics systems for underground mining, reported preliminary consolidated revenue of EUR 51.5 million for the first nine months of 2026, down sharply from EUR 70.9 million in the same period last year. Operating earnings (EBIT) fell to EUR 0.0 million from EUR 2.4 million, according to a release distributed via NEWMEDIAWIRE.

The company attributed the decline primarily to lower investment activity in coal mining and tunnel logistics markets, which significantly reduced new systems business. In addition to lower contribution margins from reduced revenue, third-quarter results were hit by the unexpected termination of a tunnel project in the Middle East, resulting in EUR 0.6 million in non-recurring charges from provisions.

Against this backdrop, and with customers’ willingness to invest expected to remain subdued in the fourth quarter, the Managing Board adjusted its 2026 forecast. Consolidated revenue is now expected between EUR 75 million and EUR 85 million, down from the previous range of EUR 95 million to EUR 115 million. EBIT is projected between EUR -0.5 million and EUR -1.5 million, compared with the prior forecast of EUR 1 million to EUR 2 million.

CEO Longjiao Wang said the company remains focused on consistently implementing its strategy and expanding its business with an extended product portfolio. He pointed to targeted sales partnerships, including with the CFH Group in Kazakhstan and South Africa, and continued development of the electromobility product portfolio with selected partners. The company’s 19-seat personnel carrier and 8-tonne cargo vehicle have already received MA certification in China, confirming their suitability for safe use in potentially explosive underground environments.

“Although subdued investment activity in the mining equipment market is weighing on our business in the short term, we continue to see attractive business prospects for the SMT Scharf Group in the medium and long term,” Wang said.

The revised guidance underscores the cyclical pressures facing mining equipment suppliers as customers delay capital spending. For SMT Scharf, the downbeat outlook arrives as it invests in strategic initiatives—electromobility, international sales and reorganization measures—that may position it for a recovery but are unlikely to offset near-term revenue weakness. The full quarterly report as of 30 September 2026 will be published on 29 October 2026. Further information about the SMT Scharf Group is available at www.smtscharf.com.
