These changes represent a significant strategic shift for the airline, potentially impacting millions of travelers.

Southwest Airlines Overhauls Travel Model with Assigned Seating and Baggage Fees

Southwest Airlines will fundamentally reshape its travel experience in 2025, announcing major policy changes that end its decades-long commitment to open seating and free baggage. Starting May 28, 2025, the airline will introduce assigned seating, new fare structures, and baggage fees, marking a substantial departure from its traditional customer service model.

The airline will replace its existing fare categories with three new options: Choice Extra, Choice Preferred, and Choice. The previously popular Wanna Get Away fare will transition to a Basic Fare with reduced benefits, final boarding group placement, and no complimentary seat selection.

Baggage fees will be substantial, with first checked bags estimated between $35-$40 and second bags ranging from $45-$50. However, Rapid Rewards cardmembers and A-List Members will receive two free checked bags for up to eight guests on the same reservation.

Southwest's President and CEO Bob Jordan framed the changes as an evolutionary step, emphasizing the airline's commitment to transformation. The new approach introduces more nuanced fare options and loyalty perks, including expanded seat selection and enhanced boarding privileges for cardholders and tier members.

These changes signal Southwest's strategic realignment with traditional airline industry practices, potentially increasing revenue while potentially challenging its reputation for budget-friendly, hassle-free travel. Travelers will need to carefully evaluate fare types, anticipate additional fees, and plan bookings more strategically to manage travel costs effectively.
