The TRATON GROUP increased its total unit sales by 10% year-over-year to 78,900 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026, according to preliminary figures released by the company. This growth marks a significant acceleration from the 4% increase in the second quarter and follows a slow start to the year, bringing cumulative unit sales for the first nine months of 2026 to 230,400 vehicles, 3% above the prior-year level. The surge was primarily driven by significantly stronger customer demand in the United States, where the company’s International Motors brand recorded a 48% increase in unit sales to 19,900 vehicles, more than offsetting declines in the first half of 2026.
The strong US performance underscores a broader recovery in the North American commercial vehicle market, which has recently seen a rebound in customer demand. For International Motors, the third-quarter jump brought its nine-month unit sales to 49,400 vehicles, 3% above the prior-year period. This contrasts with the company’s other brands, which posted more modest results. Scania Vehicles & Services increased unit sales by 3% to 22,100 vehicles in the quarter, supported by the ramp-up of production at its new plant in Rugao, China, and the government-supported “Move Brasil” loan program in Brazil. For the first nine months, Scania’s unit sales were 1% above the prior-year level.
MAN Truck & Bus recorded a slight 1% decrease in third-quarter unit sales to 24,500 vehicles, as a positive development in the truck business was offset by declines in bus and van sales. However, MAN’s nine-month unit sales were 5% above the prior-year period. Volkswagen Truck & Bus (VWTB) saw a 5% increase in the third quarter to 12,500 vehicles, also aided by the Brazilian loan program, but its nine-month sales fell 1% due to a weak first quarter. The company’s overall electric vehicle sales showed mixed results: total all-electric vehicle sales declined 6% in the third quarter to 770 units, but rose 29% in the first nine months to 2,670 units.
The acceleration in TRATON’s sales momentum is important for the commercial vehicle industry as it suggests a potential turnaround in key markets, particularly the US, which could boost supplier networks and logistics sectors. For investors, the preliminary figures offer early insight into the company’s performance ahead of its full 9M 2026 Interim Statement, scheduled for release on October 28, 2026.
