Trilogy Metals' Arctic Project Enters Federal Environmental Review, Setting Stage for Permitting Milestone

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has published a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the Arctic Project in Alaska's Ambler Mining District, Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) announced. The NOI formally initiates environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act and launches the public scoping phase, a key milestone for the high-grade copper-zinc-lead-gold-silver project.

The project is being advanced by Ambler Metals LLC, a 50/50 joint venture between Trilogy and South32 Limited. The NOI is the first major federal step under the coordinated federal and state permitting schedule published in July 2026. The roughly 29-month review timetable targets a draft EIS in October 2027, a Record of Decision in September 2028, and overall completion of remaining authorizations by November 2028. For investors and the mining industry, the start of federal review signals that the Arctic Project is moving through the regulatory process on a defined schedule, reducing uncertainty around one of North America's most prospective copper districts.

Trilogy Metals holds a 50 percent interest in Ambler Metals, which owns 100 percent of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in northwestern Alaska. The UKMP lies within the Ambler Mining District, described as one of the richest and most-prospective known copper-dominant districts in the world. It hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Exploration has focused on the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit, both within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares. Ambler Metals also has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, an Alaska Native Corporation, providing a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. Trilogy's vision is to develop the district into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods.

The news matters because copper is a critical metal for electrification, renewable energy, and infrastructure, and new domestic supply sources could reduce reliance on imports. A successful permitting process would position the Arctic Project as a significant future producer, with potential benefits for the regional economy and U.S. mineral security. The public scoping phase now gives stakeholders, including local communities and environmental groups, an opportunity to comment on the scope of the environmental review.
