UGI Utilities has announced the commencement of additional system upgrades in Hazleton starting June 16, as part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring safe and reliable service. This initiative not only aims to replace a natural gas main but also opens up opportunities for homes and businesses along the project route to convert to natural gas, a move that could lead to energy efficiency and cost savings for the community.
The construction, expected to conclude by the end of October, will primarily affect West Diamond Avenue between Linden Street and Church Street, and Hemlock Street between North James Street and Locust Street. Scheduled from Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, the project may cause road closures, detours, and traffic delays, with parking restrictions in place during construction hours. Additionally, some interruptions to natural gas service are anticipated, necessitating UGI's access to properties for inspection and equipment relighting.
While weather and working conditions could influence the project's timeline, UGI has assured that final paving and restoration will follow the completion of underground work. This upgrade represents a significant step towards modernizing Hazleton's energy infrastructure, offering both immediate and long-term benefits to the community, including the potential for reduced energy costs and a smaller carbon footprint through natural gas conversion.
