UGI Utilities has commenced a natural gas system upgrades project in Hellertown, focusing on replacing mains to improve service safety and reliability. The project, part of UGI's ongoing infrastructure investments, also creates opportunities for some homes and businesses along the construction route to convert to natural gas service.
The installation of new natural gas mains is expected to be completed by mid-January, affecting East High Street from Main Street to Easton Road. Construction will occur Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., potentially causing lane and parking restrictions for drivers, residents, and business owners during these hours.
Some interruptions to natural gas service are anticipated, requiring UGI technicians to access properties for equipment inspection and relighting. Weather and working conditions may influence the project's completion timeline. Following underground work completion, final paving and restoration will be scheduled for a later date.
This infrastructure upgrade matters because aging gas mains pose potential safety risks and reliability concerns. Modernizing these systems reduces leak risks, improves service continuity, and supports community safety standards. For businesses and residents, the project offers potential conversion to natural gas, which often provides cost savings and environmental benefits compared to other heating fuels.
The project's importance extends beyond immediate service improvements. Infrastructure investments like this contribute to long-term energy reliability and support economic development by ensuring businesses have consistent, affordable energy access. Natural gas conversions can also help reduce carbon emissions when replacing older heating systems.
UGI Utilities serves more than 760,000 customers across its service territory. Additional information about the company's services and operations is available at https://www.ugi.com.
