UGI Utilities, Inc. will begin a significant gas main replacement project in Catasauqua on March 17, targeting multiple streets and potentially transforming local energy infrastructure. The project, scheduled for completion by the end of May, represents a strategic effort to enhance natural gas service reliability and safety.
The infrastructure upgrade will impact several key streets, including South 13th Street, Bath Avenue, South 15th Street, Bethlehem Road, and South 14th Street. Construction will occur Monday through Friday from 7am to 5pm, with anticipated road closures, detours, and traffic restrictions that may inconvenience local residents and commuters.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, the project presents a unique opportunity for homeowners and businesses along the project route to convert to natural gas service. This conversion could offer potential energy efficiency benefits and potentially lower utility costs for participants.
UGI representatives note that the project will require property access to inspect and relight equipment, with some temporary interruptions to natural gas service expected. The company cautions that weather and working conditions might impact the projected completion timeline.
The infrastructure upgrade reflects UGI Utilities' commitment to maintaining and modernizing its service network, which currently serves more than 760,000 customers across its operational region. By proactively replacing gas mains and offering conversion opportunities, the utility aims to improve service reliability and infrastructure resilience.
