A critical safety message from UGI emphasizes the importance of calling 811 before digging to prevent potential utility line damage, serious injury, or death during outdoor home improvement projects.

Utility safety takes center stage this April as UGI Utilities launches a critical public awareness campaign during National Safe Digging Month. The company urges homeowners and contractors to call 811 at least three business days before starting any excavation project, highlighting a crucial safety protocol that can prevent catastrophic accidents.
According to a survey by the Common Ground Alliance, approximately 27 million U.S. homeowners plan to dig this year without contacting utility services to mark underground lines. This oversight poses significant risks to personal safety and community infrastructure. Underground utility lines, including gas, water, sewer, electric, phone, and cable television, can be inadvertently damaged during excavation.
Pennsylvania law mandates that both homeowners and contractors call 811 before initiating any digging or excavation work. The service is free for homeowners and requires only a small annual fee for contractors. When making the call, individuals should be prepared to provide details about the project's location, type of work, method of execution, and expected duration.
Chris Brown, UGI Utilities Vice President of Operations, emphasized the critical nature of this safety measure: "Whether it is a small project or a major one, the same rule applies: call 811. It is an extra step before your shovel hits the ground, but it could be a life saver."
Beyond underground utilities, UGI also reminds workers to be cautious around above-ground electrical facilities, where any contact with power lines can be fatal. By taking a few moments to call 811, homeowners and contractors can protect themselves, their communities, and essential infrastructure during spring and summer improvement projects.
